Marmaris is a working harbour town with a resort strip attached, which is exactly what makes it worth the trip. Mornings belong to the water, wooden gulets leaving before the crowds, coves you reach by ladder rather than road. Afternoons belong to the shade of the Grand Bazaar and the castle quarter. Evenings belong to meze on the marina, where the boats you sailed on are moored ten feet from your table.
Families tend to settle in Icmeler for its shallow shelf and quieter promenade. Couples lean towards Turunc or the hillside hotels above Marmaris centre. Long-stay travellers pick Armutalan for local prices and a five-minute dolmus into town.
